What squats cannot promise

Squats are not a shortcut to a particular body shape, athletic outcome, or pain-free movement. Training results vary with the whole program, nutrition, sleep, recovery, prior experience, and many other factors. A squat also cannot replace skill practice for a sport or provide a diagnosis for discomfort.

More range of motion or more weight is not automatically better. The useful dose is the one you can perform with control and recover from in the context of your broader activity. If a movement causes pain, dizziness, or feeling unwell, stop rather than trying to push through it.

A simple way to begin

Start with a chair squat in an open area. Stand in front of a stable chair with your feet about a comfortable stance width apart. Reach your hips back and bend your knees as you lower under control toward the chair. Lightly touch the chair if it helps you judge depth, then stand by pressing through your feet. Keep the pace slow enough that you can stay balanced.
